VARIETIES OF MANGOES IN GAMBIA

After starting this very important research, I realised that the task was enormous. I discovered that there were over two thousand varieties of mangoes in the world hence my decision to restrict my research to the Gambia alone. Even so the list is inexhaustible. In the Gambia, there are over one hundred varieties.

The research has been challenging, tough and often pleasurable. To be a real authority on the subject, I had to taste all the varieties of mangoes before commenting on them!

All research involves some sacrifice!

Acknowledgements & Dedication

I like to thank my dear sisters Jainaba Sissoho- Camara and Mam Oumie Sissoho for inspiring me into undertaking this very important work. I believe this very important research would go a long way in improving our understanding, knowledge and appreciation of a very delicious delicacy.

1.

Jurr

This is probably the most popular variety in the Gambia. Almost always delicious. It ripens very early at the beginning of the raining season. It is normally rounded with yellow patches.

2.

Ket

Ket is probably the biggest mangoes you could find. It ripens at the end of the raining season. It could remain green even when ripe. They are big but not as succulent as the Jurr.

3

Tandu

Medium size and greenish. Very tasty. More varieties in Casamance

4.

Kent

This is oval shaped and fuller and not as flat as other varieties. It has smooth flesh. (no strings)

5.

Grefe

As the name suggest, it is a mixture of a few varieties, probably Jurr and Kent. It is delicious and sweet.

6.

Bomba

Rounded and delightful.

7.

Sierra Leone

Originates from Sierra Leone. Greenish but delicious

8.

Lamin

Named after the place. Much smaller variety. Sweet and firm variety.

9.

Sankera

Rounder variety, small but delightful.

10.

Papiye

A mixture of mango and paw paw. Soft in texture, sweet and delicious.

11.

Koma

A small and firm variety. Very sweet.

12.

Kerosene

Small with a wiff of kerosene. Passible. Give it to the kids.

13.

Bakary Ceesay

Small but reddish in colour. Another late ripper. It is very tasty. Just when you thought the mangos have finished it arrives to remind you!!

14.

Mango Cherry

As name suggest. It is a mixture of mango and cherry. Very red in colour. Delicious.

Due to the strong demand for an early release of this research, I am obliging you. However, I am committed to adding to this list and shall continue this very important work for development in the Gambia and the whole of humanity
